Some older buildings were built with floor joists and beams that wouldn't be considered satisfactory today and yet they have stood the test of time. Some modern buildings were not built to the standards they should have been. Whatever the situation, it is sometimes necessary to have the capacity of an existing floor checked out. This is sometimes required following a pre purchase survey of a property or if the building is subject to a change of use.
Our structural calculations for checking an existing timber floor includes an assessment of any loadings given. Our structural design also includes preparing the calculations for any necessary strengthening work.
We need the following information to check the load capacity of an existing suspended timber floor:
the span of the floor joists
the centres of the floor joists
details of any unusual loadings
details of any partition walls the joists have to support
Design information
All design work is carried out in accordance with BS5268 (The structural use of timber).
The calculations provided will be suitable for Building Regulation approval.
